Joni HoffmanAt age 86, my mom, “Bubby Blanche,” has survived many life challenges. She’s a two-time cancer survivor, both breast and thyroid. She lost a son, who was born on Mother’s Day, and, last year, lost my dad. But she has not let challenges or grief keep her down. Her resilience and hilarious sense of humor constantly amaze and entertain me. This month, meet other incredible, strong Buzz residents who have also survived cancer – Claire Frazier, Bill Gage, Ashley Pratka and Stacy Middleman. Writer Jennifer Oakley captures their tales with detailed, emotional insight. Claire coped during her dark journey through singing and faith, Bill through his love for golf and Whataburger shakes, Ashley through her daughter’s cookie sales and by writing a book, and Stacy through posting about her experiences in an honest, feisty way. Above everything, all talked about how they couldn’t have made it through without support from family and friends. I hope that reading their stories will ease some of the fear that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Wishing a happy and healthy Mother’s Day to my mom and to all the loved ones facing challenges out there. [email protected]
