Alex Daily

Alex Daily produced a piece about the idea of nationalism in the Olympics, which was picked up by NPR last week.

Over the course of a week, Alex Daily, a rising senior at Indiana University Bloomington, went from having her piece about Olympic athletes representing more than just their home country heard by people throughout Texas to being broadcast on “Here & Now,” a production of NPR and WBUR Boston that broadcasts to 3.7 million people weekly nationwide.

Alex, a graduate of The Emery/Weiner School, knew that she wanted to pursue a career in journalism ever since she started as an intern at The Buzz Magazines back in 2013. She said that her time at The Buzz “solidified my decision to do something with journalism.”

After interning here at The Buzz and freelance writing during her freshman year in college, Alex was the editor of the IU school magazine during her junior year, and continued her work in journalism, finding her way to an internship at the Texas Standard in Austin this summer.

When it came to finding the right internship, Alex knew that she wanted to pursue radio in Austin. The Texas Standard is a radio station that broadcasts throughout the state of Texas from the Texas Standard Studio in the KUT Public Media Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Alex originally produced her piece for the Texas Standard about the idea of nationalism in the Olympics. She was later approached by producers to try to get this piece featured on NPR

When reflecting on her time as an intern at The Buzz, Alex said that she “learned everything - from exposure to journalism, to learning how to interview someone properly and ask the right questions to dig deeper.” (Read more of her past reflections interning at The Buzz.)

Alex is currently headed back to school in Bloomington to complete her senior year where she will intern at a community radio station. After she graduates, she hopes to continue working in radio and possibly combine that with web design.

To those interested in pursuing a career in journalism, Alex advises that you “shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions.”

“You have to take the first step and take a risk in order to learn,” she said. Although it can sometimes be intimidating, it can’t hurt to ask about something that you’re interested in.

Editor’s Note: During her time at The Buzz, Alex was an extremely hard-working and passionate member of our team, and remains part of The Buzz family . She stands out for her talent, maturity and compassion. Alex wrote our annual "Where are they headed" article in both 2015 and in 2014 - just one of her many contributions here.
