Boy Scout Troop 599, chartered at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, honored five new Eagle Scouts at a Court of Honor. The Eagle Scouts are Jacob Ladyga, Nimay Kumar, Davis Kirchhofer, Johnathan Schlief and Dillan McDonald (pictured, from left). Kirchhofer, a junior at Memorial High School, oversaw the construction of eight bookshelves used by The Kids’ Reading Room in the Spring Branch area. He joins his great-uncle Tom Baumgardner, uncle Marty Baumgardner, cousin Caleb Baumgardner, and brothers Ben and Grant Kirchhofer who are all Eagle Scouts. Kumar is a senior at Memorial High School. His Eagle Scout project involved constructing 20 screech owl boxes for the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. His brother Nikhil is an Eagle Scout. Ladyga, a senior at Westside High School, built new practice pitching mounds for the Westside High School baseball field. Building these pitching mounds in compliance with HISD requirements allows the Westside baseball field to be available for many to use. McDonald is a senior at Booker T. Washington High School for the Engineering Professions. He  rebuilt a path throughout the nature area of Sinclair Elementary School. He also built vegetable gardens. He joins his father Alex and brother Thomas McDonald as Eagle Scouts. Schlief, a senior at Stratford High School, worked with the Bayou Preservation Association to clear invasive plants and replace them with native plants along Buffalo Bayou.
