Military Family Faces Loss in Harvey Destruction

The Becker family - Josh, Jordan, Ellie, Kinsey and Lincoln - had to evacuate their Nottingham Forest home after Harvey.

Warnings were issued, weather forecasts announced; however, no one could have predicted the devastation that would strike as Hurricane Harvey tore its way through Houston this past weekend, devastation that would leave one couple’s lives in shambles.

When 28-year-old Marine veteran and Texas A&M graduate, Josh Becker, and his wife, Jordan, woke up on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 27, they had no idea what was in store for them as they came downstairs and found water in their home. With flood waters rising fast, Josh moved as much of their belongings as he could to safety while Jordan gathered their children and prepared to leave their home in Nottingham Forest 8 in the Memorial area. Through three feet of water, the Beckers carried their children, Ellie, 3, Kinsey, 2, and their two-week-old son, Lincoln, to safety and were forced to leave everything they had behind.

On top of losing everything that they own, including both of their vehicles, the Beckers do not have flood insurance, and with their home now seven feet under water, the financial loss they are facing in the upcoming months will be an uphill battle for their family.

Though their home resides on Buffalo Bayou, the Beckers' property lies within the 500 year floodplain where flood insurance is not typically needed or required. However, due to the record-breaking destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey and the drainage water released from Addicks Dam, this storm has cost the Beckers, and thousands of other families in the Memorial area, their home. 

City officials state that homes along the bayou might not have water recession for another month, leading to future issues such as mold, structural damage, property damage, and other complications. With little to no access to their home, the Beckers have no choice but to wait this out and lean on their family and friends for support. In the hopes of helping them rebuild and restart their lives, friends have founded a Gofundme account for the Beckers and members of the Houston community have come forward to help them.
