As the end of October approaches, Episcopal High School hosts events such as wearing Halloween costumes to school to celebrate Halloween. One special Halloween event sponsored by the Interact Club of Episcopal High School was a haunted house.

The Interact Club is a nation-wide organization that offers leadership and service opportunities and is sponsored by the Rotary Club. Because of this, all of the money that was raised selling tickets for the haunted house went to a Hurricane Harvey relief fund as well as towards ending polio, a project that Interact has been working on for years.

This year, Interact members spent Thurs., Oct. 26-Sat., Oct. 28 setting up the haunted house. Each year, the haunted house is set up in the Band Hall, so a lot of work is put into transforming the Band Hall into a haunted house. Students not only decorate this room with scary Halloween characters, but they surround the room with tarp to create a web of walkways.

This allows for a square room to feel like a never-ending maze. Once the tarp is put up, then the students are allowed to decorate the haunted house to scare the guests. In fact, I got to put spider webs on the top of the tarp to add a sense of spook.

Once all of this was done, the Haunted House was able to take place. The day before Halloween, the haunted house was open to the school! Anabel Kirton, a sophomore at Episcopal High School, decided to be an actor and scare the students “to get involved with the Interact Club” in a “fun way.” However, before being able to frighten the students, Anabel had to sit through a period of time putting “liquid latex and paint” on her face. She decided to wear black clothes to be able “to jump out at people” and scare them without being noticeable.

The haunted house turned out to be a success! Anabel said the students had fun and people got “really scared.” Even Anabel had a fun time being an actor; she got to scare her friends and said, “Their screams were hilarious” and it gave her an adrenaline rush. Anabel said she would definitely do this again and thinks that the haunted house has so far been “the thing I have enjoyed the most” while being in the Interact club.
