Birthday girl Georgia McQueen with her smash cake and "Georgia peach" party favor.

This past Tuesday, our younger daughter Georgia turned one. As a parent, it is always an emotional moment to watch your little baby turn one year older (at least for me it is). The time when they are little truly flies and you begin to understand that age-old saying about parenting that “the days are long but the years are short.”

When our twins turned one in July 2015, we threw a big bash. We rented out our neighborhood clubhouse and booked a snow cone truck. We had beer and wine for the adults and activities for the kids. As first-time parents, it is very natural to throw a big bash. I felt a little mommy guilt for not hosting a big party for Georgia like we did for the twins, so I decided last-minute to host a small family birthday celebration at Hedwig Park in Memorial.

It was a perfect day. I picked up a little pink “smash cake” at H-E-B, and ordered some 1-year-old birthday décor on Amazon (thank goodness for two-day shipping!). We set up her high chair and a birthday sign under a beautiful tall tree, right where the lighting was just perfect. After all of the cousins played in the park for about 30 minutes while the grown-ups visited by the picnic table, we gathered around to sing our girl Happy Birthday and watch her dig into her pink smash cake. She was a little hesitant and fussy at first (it was during her usual naptime), but had fun. After taking photos, we opened presents.

For party favors, everyone got a peach from our sweet Georgia peach.  It was a simple sweet moment I will always cherish, and I didn’t even have to book a clubhouse or food truck.
