Valentine’s Day is supposed to be romantic and fun, but people in relationships often see only this: $$$. Going out to eat is nice, but can become repetitive. With plenty of planning time left before V-Day, I have come up with some ideas that are more obscure than simply going out to eat, and will probably be cheaper, too.

Volunteer together

Houston has been really cold lately, and there are many people that could use a warm blanket or some food. Volunteer at a homeless shelter around the city or help package food at the Houston Food Bank. Only an hour or two of your time could make a big difference, and there’s nothing like helping out other people to make you feel warm and fuzzy and closer to whoever you are with.

Go see a show

Dinner and a movie is typical for many couples. Go out and try something new! There are so many plays and shows going on around Houston at any given time. If you are looking for a concert, check out my article on February concerts in Houston!

Take a road trip

Even if it’s a small getaway to Fredericksburg, New Braunfels or somewhere else cute, spend a day or two getting away from the big city and celebrating a slower pace of life. If you’re looking for a big adventure, try camping in Big Bend near El Paso.

Go to a sports game

This is a variation on dinner and a movie, but if you and your significant other are sports fans, there’s nothing more fun than going to dinner and then attending a sports game! Football season is basically over (at least for Houston . . . cry), but catch another of the many sports games going on in Houston.

Throw a party

Include your friends and family in your Valentine’s celebrations - host a party or a get-together for EVERYONE you love! There’s a million heart-shaped cookies, candies, cakes and even pizzas out there, so decorating or eating to the theme should be easy!

Go to a museum

Houston has a lot of great museums, and more specifically, a lot of great exhibits going on right now. At MFAH, check out the incredible Oscar de la Renta exhibit showcasing some of his famous dresses.

Work out together

Did you know The Buzz hosts a workout every Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. at Evelyn’s Park with Pledge To Fitness? The workout is free and all levels are welcome! Or perhaps take a walk around a nearby park (Memorial, Hermann, Levy, etc.) together.

However you decide to spend it, happy Valentine's Day!
