Lining up for the Parade of Flags, these students and parents carried the Mexican flag: (back row, from left) Oswaldo Prado, Cecilia Prado, Sarah Cantu, Lupita Clark, Maryana Estrada, Marisela Martinez, Maria Bachoura and Natalie Johnson; (front row, from left) Valentina Prado, Oswaldo Prado, Raven Lopez, Ricky Estrada, Maximus Salazar, Nayeli Arriaga, Angelina Kraft and Nicole Johnson.

“Let the games begin!” families chanted at Yorkshire Academy’s bi-annual Olympics Celebration on Fri., Feb. 2. The festivities included a Parade of Flags with families dressed in colors or attire representing a variety of cultures and country as they walked behind 56 different flags. Students participated in games resembling winter Olympic events and then everyone enjoyed a feast at the International Food Court. International treats included dishes such as Jollof Rice from Nigeria, Gulab Jamun from India, Lamingtons from Australia, and of course, good old American hot dogs.

Students, including Kelly Park and Helen Herman, assisted Mr. Scott Kim in the lighting of the Olympic Torch.

As is traditional since South Korea is hosting the Olympics this year, Yorkshire’s South Korean families marched last in the parade. After running the torch around the “stadium,” students assisted Mr. Scott Kim, a Yorkshire father, in the lighting of the Olympic torch. Mr. Kim proudly led the school in a South Korean cheer to get the festivities going.
