Summer interns Abby Cohan and Benjamin Cohen asked around to get the scoop on top summer trends ranging from fashion to food to travel and more.

Fashion:

Friends Maggie Winston and Ella Fannin, both age 15, said Van shoes and clothes are “very in.” Sofia Colby, an incoming freshman at Texas A&M University and graduate of Stratford High School, said she’s been noticing a lot of off-the-shoulder tops, round Ray Ban sunglasses, smaller handbags, and a lot white accents incorporated into outfits. Lily Kleban and Ava Cotta, both age 12, also said off-the-shoulder tops as well as crop tops are happening now. Incoming senior at The Emery/Weiner School, Drew Ellis, is very big into fashion herself. She said platform wedges, bathing suits with different color stripes, floral dresses, dresses with sneakers and small sunglasses are all up-to-date and trending this summer. Additionally, 18-year-old Amanda Doskocil and 19 year-old Sara Perry said that fun glasses and off-the-shoulder shirts are becoming really popular. Also, the Alvarado family noted that they are seeing more and more dresses being worn with tennis shoes. In fact, Ms. Alvarado was wearing a dress with sneakers when we talked to her. Finally, Michael Kaplan, an incoming freshman and Indiana University and a graduate of the Emery/Weiner School said, “I see a lot of chubbies and short shorts.”

Food:

Maggie Winston and Ella Fannin said that local coffee shops are trending now instead of the usual Starbucks. Sofia Colby has definitely seen avocado toast, Açaí bowls, and green smoothies grow in popularity. Additionally, Drew Ellis noted that refreshing snacks such as smoothies, salads and ice cream are big when it comes to managing this hot and humid Texas heat. Meanwhile, the Alvarado family found that takis and delicious burgers are trendsetting foods. Incoming freshman at University of Chicago and graduate of Philips Exeter Academy, Adele Behar, said there are tons of new restaurants that are opening up such as Nobu or Fig and Olive. Everyone really loves Aqua S US and Red Circle, which are trendy ice cream stores. “Pokéworks is Houston’s top place to get poke,” said Adele.

Lily Kleban, Ava Cotta

12-year-old Bellaire residents Lily Kleban and Ava Cotta love hanging out at Evelyn’s Park.

Houston Summer Fun/Travel

For travel and Houston fun, Sofia Colby noticed that during the summer, people tend to visit trendy areas with cool mural walls such as Montrose, Rice Village and CityCentre. There are also many parades and concerts going on that people attend as they have more free time. As for travel, she has noticed that Europe, California, and Mexico are some popular areas for Houstonians to explore. Drew Ellis also said she has seen people travelling to New York, Colorado, (Aspen and Vail seem to be top places), along with group trips venturing to Fiji and the Dominican Republic. Travel was top of mind for Amanda Doskocil and Sara Perry when asked about summer trends. They noted that going to nearby beaches such as Galveston Beach or Crystal Beach are enjoyable quick getaways. With Galveston beaches recently being home to beautiful blue water, many went to check it out. Additionally, the Alvarado family noted that they are seeing many friends and neighbors traveling to Mexico for summertime adventures. Adele Behar feels LGBTQ Pride parades and events are a really big deal not just in Houston but worldwide. She also noted that Europe seems to be the trend this year in terms of vacations. Finally, Lily Kleban and Ava Cotta think Evelyn’s Park is a great space to hang out, especially since it’s easy to walk to from their houses in Bellaire.

Buzz summer interns Benjamin Cohen and Abby Cohan give their takes on summer trends, too. Abby agrees, noting that off-the-shoulder tops with jean shorts are trending. They both found that travelling outside of Texas for summer camp or vacation is really popular this summer. Everyone’s looking for a break from the heat and humidity. In regards to food, we find meals such as smoothie bowls or salads as healthy and refreshing.
