Summer series

Bellaire librarian Mary Cohrs talks about the fun of book series, particularly over summer days.

Book Buzz is a blog produced in collaboration with neighborhood librarians from Houston Public Library, Harris County Public Library and the Bellaire Library.

One of my fondest summer memories is recalling how excited I was when a small package would arrive in the mail. When I saw the package, I knew that I had another delivery of the latest Nancy Drew mystery to enjoy on a hot summer day. Neither hot days nor rainy days mattered for as soon as I opened the box and saw the familiar yellow cover I knew the day would be great.

As a librarian I see the same eagerness in the eyes of young readers as they come across a new title of a series that they are reading and they want to read them in order, sometimes a challenge for me identifying which title is “number 6”.

The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling are still sought by readers followed by an interest in Rainbow Magic books and three nonfiction series: Who Was (stories of trailblazers, legends, innovators, and creators; What Was (dives into our world’s most important historical events) and Where Is (a world tour through our most exciting places around the world).

But children are not the only ones who read series. Adult readers have series to choose from as well, and they also want to read them in order, too.

One series that come to mind is The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkein, a perennial reading list favorite. Over the years I have enjoyed Patrick O’Brian’s series that begins with Master and Commander, the first of his now famous Aubrey/Maturin novels, regarded by many as the greatest series of historical novels ever written.

Another favorite character I anxiously await a new title to be published is the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. Jack Reacher fills my good-guys-win need. Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon series of mystery novels set in national parks fills my need for mystery and interest in national parks.

Whether you are into cozy mysteries, spy thriller, romance, or fantasy there is a summer series for you.
