Incarnate Word Academy students gathered in the IWA Young Leaders Program Conference Center for a presentation from the Astros Foundation. They were stunned when Astros outfielders Jake Marisnick and Josh Reddick walked through the doors instead.  “Guest what, we’re not the Astros Foundation!” Josh Reddick said. The students cheered, clapped and laughed. The Astros teammates had more surprises up their sleeve.  They presented 30 tickets to Game 1 of the ALDS playoffs this Friday, Oct. 5.

After the cheering subsided, Marisnick and Reddick invited the girls to play, “Ask an Astro” and responded to questions from IWA students. After answering questions like, “What’s George Springer like?” and “Will you go to homecoming with me?” the Astros stars spoke about sportsmanship, leadership and teamwork.

Reddick said, “Sports or not, mental strength is important. I tried out for my middle school team twice, but didn't make it. I got kicked off my ninth grade team cause they thought I wasn’t good enough. If you want it, that can’t stop you.”

Six sisters from the Congregation of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament were at school for the treat including current IWA President, Sister Lauren Beck. Sister Brigid Cummins, former principal of Incarnate Word Academy, said, “I want to thank you all for your sportsmanship. I've been following the Astros since 1969.  We’re very proud of you and appreciate what you do.”

On Friday, the 30 lucky students and Sisters will have a short walk to Minute Maid Park as Incarnate Word Academy is directly across the street from Minute Maid Stadium. All IWA students are rooting for their favorite neighbors.

Houston Astros play the Cleveland Indians Friday, Oct. 5, 1:05 p.m. in Game One of the ALDS playoffs. See the full schedule here. Go 'Stros!
