Carol Brejot took a respite in the fall to see Portugal, the westernmost point of Europe on the Atlantic, and Spain. She filled her head with history at the National Palace of Sintra in Portugal, which survived the Middle Ages virtually intact, and Belem in Lisbon, the historic district of Lisbon. While there were plenty of formal gardens to wander about, it was the Cascais-Porto: Douro Valley tour and Quinta da Pacheca winery where she really satisfied her thirst. FYI, it’s one of the first properties to bottle wine under its own label, according to a document dated April 1738. The trip ended with a tapas walking tour in Old Barcelona.
