The World of the Others series

Rebecca Denham from Houston Public Library describes The World of the Others series by Anne Rice, fast-paced fantasy reads. The newest book in the series, Wild Country, releases on March 5.

Welcome to the world of the Others, an alternate Earth where elementals, shapeshifters, and vampires control the world’s natural resources and tolerate humans. Barely.

Thanks to Penguin Random House, I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy of Wild Country and it is already one of my favorite titles in the series! Anne Bishop is one of the most talented world builders writing today, in my opinion. She deftly balances a multifaceted world with complex characters and intricate plots. Multiple points of view, complex characters and high stakes life-and-death situations make this a fast-paced, thrilling read. If you enjoy urban fantasy, then Wild Country and The World of the Others series is for you.

In Wild Country, open attacks on the terra indigene lead to the Great Predation where entire communities were wiped out by the Elders in retaliation. One of the decimated communities was Bennett; now a ghost town haunted by the memory of its former residents. An uneasy truce has formed between humans and terra indigene and both sides have agreed to resettle Bennett as an Others controlled community allowing selected humans live side-by-side with Others. But human motivations are shadowy, and the terra indigene are wary. Can this experimental town survive?

Wild Country can be read without background knowledge of The World of the Others series, but I would recommend starting with Written in Red, Bishop’s first novel set in Thaisia. Wild Country releases on March 5, 2019.
