Parker Posey

Alexandra Drake from Houston Public Library shines a light on You're on an Airplane: A Self-Mythologizing Memoir by Parker Posey.

You could be one of the many people who are either vaguely familiar with Parker Posey, or saw her once in that one movie a long time ago. I, on the other hand, have been obsessed with her dry, yet playful brand of quirky off-beat for years. She is an absolute witless delight as Libby Mae in “Waiting for Guffman,” exasperated and ridiculous as the yuppie wife in “Best in Show,” and bares her teenage teeth as Darla in “Dazed and Confused.” Throughout her 30-year career, she has done voice work and appeared in multiple television shows, as well as films, ranging from obscure independent fare to action movies.

Regardless of the venue, I am always delighted to find her and meet her latest character. In her debut book, You’re on an Airplane!, she shares a collection of memories, recipes, collages and personal reflections. We finally get an in-depth look at Parker Posey the woman, daughter and actress. Her unique insights are engaging, thoughtful, poignant and amusing. Despite her familiarity with Hollywood royalty, she is a true storyteller and recalls with ease and wit the fantastic experiences and talented people she’s been fortunate enough to know.

Usually, I opt for an audio version; however, this book, much like Notorious RBG, is a treasure trove of original artwork and photographs that envelop the reader in Posey’s distinctive worldview. Glittered with Southern witticisms, hearing her funny, honest and intimate voice, you’ll genuinely wish you were on an airplane, with your head on her shoulder, quickly becoming fabulous friends.
