Houston Aphasia Recovery Center Let's Talk Luncheon

Let's Talk Luncheon

Houston Aphasia Recovery Center (HARC), the premier resource in Houston for those affected by aphasia, is pleased to announce the 9th Annual Let’s Talk Luncheon, which will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at The Post Oak Hotel. The event will benefit HARC’s 26 different rotating programs that provide wellness, education, advocacy and resources for people with aphasia, their caregivers, and the greater Houston medical community.

Aphasia is a difficulty with communication, speaking or understanding words, as a result of a stroke or brain injury. HARC creates a safe haven where participants engage in supported communication, therapeutic socialization, recreation and camaraderie to fully participate in life.

Luncheon Chairs Belinda and Corky Hillhouse alongside Honorary Chairs Fady Armanious and Bill Baldwin will welcome guests to a fun-filled luncheon with a performance by the HARC Heralds Choir. Shelby Hodge will serve as the luncheon emcee. HARC will present an Honorary Partnership Award to the University of Houston’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders for its support in providing an opportunity for people with aphasia to communicate in a supportive environment.

Guest speaker Sarah Scott and her mother Joanie Scott will share her experience with aphasia. In May 2009 at the age of 18, Scott suffered a stroke at school. Aphasia affected her speech as well as her ability to read and write. Scott and her parents founded a support group for people of working age who have aphasia. Her YouTube Channel has over 2 million views and she’s known worldwide for her advocacy of aphasia. She has received numerous awards for her volunteer work supporting stroke survivors and has taken part in many research studies to improve treatment and develop resources for people with aphasia. Her mother suffered a stroke two years after. Although Scott’s mom does not have aphasia, she is a passionate advocate.

During the luncheon, guests will have the opportunity to bid on the online silent auction featuring priceless luxury experiences to help raise funds for HARC.
