The Lawn at Memorial City Grand Opening Showcase

Houstonians of all ages are invited to celebrate the city’s diverse food, music, art and cultural scenes at the grand opening event of Memorial City’s newest greenspace, The Lawn at Memorial City. The entertainment lineup includes live music by NBC’s The Voice finalist, Stephanie Rice; SoulDig, which includes members of the Grammy-Award winning, La Mafia; and Houston’s Surf Rock ‘n Roll band, Phantom Royals. Other notable appearances include community performances highlighted by TUTS Humphreys School of Musical Theatre and Jo Ella Exley Elementary Fara Bango marimba ensemble, drum show by Kaminari Taiko of Houston, demonstrations by Houston Shao-Lin Academy Tiger Dancers, a second line performance from Free Rads Street Band, and an interactive hip hop dance routine by Break Free Hip Hop School.

Guests can join the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art – producers of the famed Houston Art Car Parade – for a hands-on workshop to create their own miniature Art Car or peruse 15 of this year’s official Art Cars on display before the spring parade. The Lawn will also feature unique art exhibitions as notable street artist Shelbi Nicole designs a 50-foot mural onsite, as well as the large-scale, hand-made aluminum butterfly displays from the Newspring Butterfly Festival. Throughout the afternoon, The Lawn will be activated with face painting, balloon art, street performers, cotton candy, kettle corn and various food stations. Adjacent to The Lawn, the public can also enjoy live poolside entertainment at Hotel ZaZa Memorial City’s Beach Club.
