MFAH Presents the Ninth Edition of Five Funny French Films

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents the ninth annual edition of Five Funny French Films. The popular series features performances by well-known French actors, including Academy Award-winner Jean Dujardin and beloved French character star Raimu. Visit mfah.org/ffff for additional details. (Directed by Franck Dubosc, France, 2018, 107 min.)

Franck Dubosc stars as a successful, self-absorbed businessman who tries to seduce an attractive woman by pretending he is handicapped. His plan backfires when she introduces him to her sister, who uses a wheelchair.

Le retour du héros (Return of the Hero)
(Directed by Laurent Tirard, France, 2018, 90 min.)

Set in France in 1809, the film stars Jean Dujardin as the suave Captain Charles-Grégoire Neuville, who is sent off to war following a marriage proposal to Pauline. After Neuville falls short of his promise to write her every day, Pauline’s sister Elisabeth (Mélanie Laurent) forges letters on Neuville’s behalf to mend her sister’s broken heart. Everything falls apart when Neuville returns home.

En liberté! (The Trouble with You)

When French Riviera detective Yvonne (Adèle Haenel) discovers her late husband and local hero was actually a crooked cop, she tries to make amends with Antoine (Pio Marmaï), who was wrongfully imprisoned for her husband’s crimes. This action-packed crime comedy follows Yvonne and Antoine as he tries to get back to his wife (Audrey Tatou) and readjust to life on the other side.

After Françoise’s (Miou-Miou) husband leaves her for a younger woman, her two daughters Rose (Camille Cottin) and Alice (Camille Chamoux) whisk her away on a beach vacation. However, the two sisters are polar opposites—Rose is a care-free party girl and Alice is married with two young children—causing the trip to get out of hand when Rose sets her mother up with a handsome resort employee.

La femme du boulanger (The Baker’s Wife)
(Directed by Marcel Pagnol, France, 1938, 133 min.)

Based on the novel by Jean Giono, this tragi-comedic discovery stars the legendary Raimu as the middle-aged baker, Amiable. Following their move to a small Provençal village, Amiable’s young, beautiful wife runs off with a handsome shepherd, leaving Amiable distraught and unable to continue baking. Facing life without their daily bread, the townspeople band together to persuade the baker’s unfaithful wife to return. From the director of “The Marseilles Trilogy,” this new 4K restoration was made.
