MFAH's Korean Film Days Series

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will screen five, award-winning films from South Korea during its first Korean Film Days series.

Friday, Oct. 25, 7 p.m.
This film charts the rise and fall of fortuneteller Nae-gyeong (Song Kang-ho), who is able to assess the personality, mental state, and habits of a person by looking at their face. Moving to the capital city of Hayang, he becomes a celebrity. Entrusted with discerning the faces of traitorous courtiers for the king, Nae-gyeong is caught in a power struggle between the country’s two most influential men: vice premier Kim Jong-seo (Baek Yun-shik), and the King’s brother Prince Su-yang (Lee Jung-jae).

In the corner of a small café, Areum (Kim Min-hee) sits typing on her laptop, eavesdropping on the people at tables around her: a couple accusing each other of serious crimes, an old man trying to rekindle romance with a younger woman, and a narcissistic filmmaker working on his next project. Each of these situations unfold as Areum types, begging the question “Is Areum typing what she hears or is she overhearing what is being written?”

The Running Actress (Yeobaeoo-neun Oneuldo)

Moon So-ri’s debut feature is comprised of three separate short films - each directed by and starring the filmmaker, made while attending Chung-Ang University: The Actress (2014), The Running Actress (2015) , and The Best Director (2015).

Hit the Night (Bam-chi-gi)
(Directed by Jeong Ga-young, 2017, 85 min., in Korean with English subtitles)

Under the pretense of research for her latest project, a young filmmaker invites out a man she has been interested in getting to know for dinner and drinks. Throughout the evening, she bombards him with intimate questions about his love life in an effort to seduce him.

Burning (Beoning)
Sunday, Oct. 27, 5 p.m.
(Directed by Chang-dong Lee, South Korea / Japan, 2018, 148 min., in English and Korean with English subtitles)
Based on Haruki Murakami’s short story, this critically-acclaimed film follows the story of alienated introvert, Jong–su (Yoo Ah-in), who works part-time as a deliveryman. His already difficult life is complicated further when he bumps into an old friend, Hae-mi (Jeon Jong-seo) and her new boyfriend Ben (Steven Yeun), a sophisticated and wealthy man who she met on a recent trip. When Hae-mi mysteriously disappears, Jong-su begins to suspect the new boyfriend.
