National Tap Dance Day Intensive by City Dance Studio

Tasia Pominov

Houston City Dance Studio presents its inaugural National Tap Dance Day Intensive on May 25 to celebrate the unique American art form of tap dancing. A full day of tap classes will be held at City Dance Studio, 1307 West Clay St., from 9 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

National Tap Dance Day was first signed into law in the United States on Nov. 8, 1989. Every year, this national day is celebrated on May 25, the birthday of Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, born in 1877. Robinson was a famous African American tap dancer, vaudeville star and actor in Broadway plays and in films, including several with Shirley Temple in the 1930s.

All across the country, studios and interest groups come together on May 25 to salute this great American art form. This year, City Dance Studio is proud to join in the celebration.

Students of all ages may choose from a variety of classes offered at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Classes include Classic Tap Standards, Advanced Improvisation, Beginning Jazz/Tap Choreography and more.

City Dance Studio features an exciting line-up of skilled tap dance teachers for this inaugural event. Dorena Battaglino, Simone Brooks, Kimbrlee Childress and Elijah Gibson will be working with students at all levels in the program.

Additionally, City Dance Studio will offer an exclusive Teacher Workshop for tap teachers who would like to go deeper into their personal tap education or “mix up” their typical tap class and teaching style. This hour-long workshop, led by Battaglino, will be held at 4 p.m.

Students may register for single classes ($25/class) or for the entire four-class intensive ($80). The teacher workshop ($25) is available for teachers only and should be registered for separately.
