Trees for Houston Giveaway

Trees For Houston in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, the world’s largest member nonprofit organizations dedicated to tree planting, will distribute 1,000 free trees to Houston-area residents.

Hurricane Harvey produced more than 1 trillion gallons of rainfall in Harris County alone, the flooding of which led to thousands of trees lost and subsequently removed. Replanting trees will not only have environmental benefits, but also serve as an effective form of flood mitigation in many areas – especially those outside the federally regulated 100-year flood plain that were damaged from the hurricane.

Six tree species will be available in in three- to five-gallon containers. Species include common persimmon, black cherry, eastern redbud, bald cypress, river birch and pecan. The distribution event will abide by COVID-19 safety measures by asking all participants to drive through the tree pick-up while volunteers load the tree of choice in the trunk, back seat or pickup bed. Prior distribution events held by Trees For Houston have reached more than 50 neighborhoods.
