The cast and crew of the Emery Weiner Middle School’s production of Guys and Dolls Jr.
Every year since 2017, the Emery Weiner Middle School has allowed its students to perform their own fall musical. This year’s production of Guys and Dolls Jr. is the third musical that the middle school has performed, and their past productions include Thirteen in 2018 and Legally Blonde Jr. in 2017. These students have been in the rehearsal process for most of the school year so far, so cast members were eager to finally perform the show in front of audiences.
The show was directed by Ms. Katherine Goldman, and it featured a cast of 27 middle school students and a crew of 15 students from Emery Weiner’s middle and upper school. The two show dates were Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. Both shows had nearly full audiences and ran for about an hour and a half.
The cast and crew seemed to really enjoy putting the show up on its feet. Eighth grader Evelyn Burt, who played “Sister Sarah Brown” in Guys and Dolls Jr., said, “The show was so much fun! It was a lot of work, but it was totally worth it.” The cast had lots of rehearsal time to work and perfect the show, including a tech week in which students had to rehearse full run throughs of the show until 6:30 p.m.
Even though Emery Weiner’s middle school students have always been able to participate in spring musicals with high school students, Emery just started allowing middle school students to have their own annual play and musical, and it is a great way to prepare Emery’s middle school students for high school theater. The middle school show additions provide more sources of entertainment for Emery family members and allow middle schoolers to participate in more extracurricular activities and gain more theatrical experience.
