Laurel Davis, a third grader at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, recruited friends to help host a dance camp at her home to raise money for breast-cancer research.
We have some close family friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Last year, at school, we made pillows for the women at MD Anderson who had breast cancer. My pillow was made of Wonder Woman cloth, and my note said, “Stay as strong as Wonder Woman because we all know you are better than her.” Ever since then, I have been thinking about what else I could do to help. I have always wanted to have a dance camp at my house for little girls, so I decided that I could do the camp to raise money for breast cancer. I asked my friends, Caroline Kobe, Marie Walsh, Corinne Ward, Claire Herrera and Kendall Blalock, to help.
Then the hard part started. I passed out the flyer I made to little girls I know. At first, I thought we would have the camp for 10 girls. But word got around, and we ended up with 20 little girls between the ages of 4 and 7. My friends and I decided, after a lot of debate and changes, that we would use the song Happy by Pharrell Williams. We got together at my house almost every Friday afternoon in February to make up our dance, and we practiced a lot at school. We made two pink-ribbon T-shirts, a hot pink one for the camp “coaches” and a white one for the girls attending the camp. We served pizza and pink food. We did the little girls’ makeup, and our moms helped us paint their fingernails.
Everyone had a great time, and we raised over $1,000 that we gave to MD Anderson. All the moms said how much the little girls loved being with the “big” girls, and all of us loved feeling important and in charge. It was a lot of hard work to do this, but we had fun!
