Nine years ago, I took the bus from the parking lot at Memorial City Mall to Camp Longhorn for the first time. Little did I know, I would spend every summer since at this little piece of heaven on earth. I would sail on Inks Lake, slide down the water soc and blob on the blob.
These activities were not the main reason why I keep coming back; I keep coming back because of the people I’ve met. The friends I’ve made over the past nine years are some of my closest, and they’ve seen me at my best and my worst.
This year; however, my role changed from camper to counselor. I was the counselor to 12 8-year-olds. These girls were sweet and cute, but they were more than that. They looked up to me as a role model just like I looked up to my counselors so many years ago.
They are the next generation of campers who will carry on the traditions that I have valued for nine years, and I am honored to have been able to impact their lives just as my life has been impacted by camp, my friends and counselors. I am a better person because of the things I have learned at camp and because of the friends I have made.
