At 3. a.m. one night Bellaire Police Officers arrest three suspects who are believed to have broken into as many as 20 vehicles that night. Over the next month, two more suspects were arrested and charged in connection with this series of vehicle burglaries bringing the total to five vehicle burglary suspects arrested. At 10:30 a.m. on a typical Saturday morning Bellaire Police Officers arrest a suspect that had broken into a home and stole approximately $40,000.00 in jewelry. Upon further investigation it is believed that this burglary suspect may be responsible for as many as four other home burglaries in Bellaire. At 8 p.m. on a Wednesday evening, Bellaire Detectives file charges on two suspects for breaking into a home and stealing firearms and electronics. Officers recover all the stolen property in this case.
Besides being crooks stealing in Bellaire, what do these five car burglars and three home burglars have in common? They were caught as the result of the quick thinking of citizens. In all three cases, citizens seeing what they believed to be suspicious activity called and reported what they saw to the Bellaire Police Department. These three calls are what led to the arrests of these suspects in three separate cases. These three calls from citizens are what led the Bellaire Police Department taking eight thieves off our streets and in all likelihood prevented an untold number of Bellaire residents from becoming victims of future crimes.
It is this partnership between the citizen and police that makes Bellaire a safe place to live. There are a limited number of police officers working at any given time and we’re dependent on citizens being our eyes and years. Citizens should never hesitate to call the Bellaire Police Department if they see or hear something that they believe is out of place or criminal activity. Bellaire Police ask that you call 713-668-0487 or 911 immediately when something out of place is observed, we know of cases where burglars have gotten away because citizens waited as much as an hour to call in after seeing them.
Also, we ask that you don’t put yourself in danger. Only if it is absolutely necessary to keep somebody for getting hurt, citizens should never attempt to stop a crime in progress. The Bellaire Police Department request that you call us immediately and let us do what we are trained for.
