Last Friday night was filled with laughter and surprises as our student council put on their second annual Mr. Mustang competition. The competition is between four or five guys from each grade level and it is like Miss USA or Miss America but instead of girls competing, it is boys.

The competition began at 5:30 p.m. hosted by senior Karina Arnold and junior King Smith. The show began with the swimwear portion, which was filled with many different takes on the look. Senior Grant Dixon took a marine approach as he strutted the catwalk in a shark costume while junior Ben Brown gave the audience a laugh dressed as a overweight, Hawaiian tourist.

After each round, the judges, who consisted of four staff members and the reining Mr. Mustang champion, Drew Kibbe, decided to cut a couple contestants from the competition. After swimwear came talent, which varied from freshmen cup stacking to seniors jump roping. There was also a ton of lip synching and dancing which seemed to be the audience’s favorite talents according to their laughter and applause.

After a few more contestants were cut finally came the anticipated Q&A round that featured some pretty weird questions and some extremely funny answers. Some of the questions that swilled around the contestants were, if you could be a cup of coffee what flavor would you be, what weapon would you use in a zombie apocalypse, what actor would you want to be friends with, and so much more. The contestants did their best to impress the judges and keep the audience laughing.

Lastly came the formalwear portion of the competition and the men dressed in their nicest suits and senior Grant Dixon even whipped out a snazzy American flag tuxedo and a dozen red roses to hand out to the judges. I am guessing those flowers won over the judges because next thing we knew, Grant Dixon was getting crowned Mr. Mustang!

I have to say, Mr. Dixon was definitely the most creative contestant and earned the loudest roars of laughter that he received. I would have liked to see an underclassman take the cake but there is always next year!
