The Spring Branch-Memorial Sports Association’s 13U Sky basketball team won the girls’ gold division championship at the Coleman Coliseum. The Sky was undefeated all season, but the team’s worthy competitors, the Mystics, had a great game plan and took a commanding lead in the fourth quarter of the championship game. With fewer than 40 seconds remaining in the game, the Sky fought back with two free throws from Morgan Matheny and a three-pointer at the buzzer from Meta Sapien that sent the game into overtime. After a hard-fought battle, the Sky won 30-29. The champions are (pictured, top row, from left) coaches Mark Matheny, Baris Ertan and Fidel Sapien; (middle row, from left) Ellie McLeod, Leyla Ertan, Lindsey Guel, Meta Sapien, Avery McGill; (bottom row, from left) Rachel Kim, Morgan Matheny, Ellie St. Martin, Emma Cordola and Ashley Thompson.
