Twelve-year-old Colin Crane and St. Francis Episcopal Day School fourth grader Katelyn Cutter raced in the Houston Kids Triathlon. The annual event is the largest kids’ triathlon in the country, and is held at the University of Houston. Colin and Katelyn and her siblings, John and Lauren, were among this year’s 2,600 participants. The event is divided into two age categories, and Colin and Katelyn raced in the senior group with a 200-yard swim, six-mile bike and one-mile run. Colin finished in second place in his age group, missing first place by only three seconds. Biking was his favorite part of the race, and he averaged 20.5 mph. Competitive biking runs in the family, as Colin’s father is an accomplished track cyclist with some national titles. Right now, Colin doesn’t have immediate plans for more triathlons, but he definitely wants to compete in the same event again next year. Katelyn placed in the top quarter of girls in her age group. “It’s a good challenge, and she really feels a sense of accomplishment when she is done,” said Katelyn’s mom, Adrienne. Swimming is Katelyn’s favorite portion of the race, and she is well conditioned by swimming with the Dad’s Club year round.
