Green thumbs
More than 230 students, parents and teachers from Briargrove Elementary gathered for the third year to participate in the national Green Apple Day of Service, facilitated by the PTO. The Briargrove theme this year was “Growing Our Gardens and Connecting Our Community.” The volunteers spent the morning mulching, harvesting, seeding and tidying up the school’s butterfly and edible gardens, orchards, outdoor classrooms, and sports and play areas. The produce harvested, including sweet potatoes, eggplant and collard greens, were sold at Whole Foods on Voss to raise funds to reinvest back into the gardens. Participants included (pictured, from left) first-grade teacher Marie Relampagos, fifth grader Sofia Salman, fifth-grade teacher Adrian Cortes, fifth-grade teacher Allen Schagene and fifth grader Natalie Ghannad.
