Nancy Ames and Ginger Blanton (pictured, from left), founding members of the Ladies for Literacy guild, sipped tea and mint lemonade and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and desserts with former First Lady Barbara Bush at the guild’s inaugural meeting. The purpose of the guild is to support the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, whose mission is to improve quality of life through the ability to read, write, speak clearly and think critically. Betty Hrncir opened the program by welcoming attendees on behalf of Maria Bush, foundation co-chair, and Alice Mosing, both hosts of the event. Other guests included Lilly Andress, Deborah Cannon, Paige Fertitta, Julie Baker Finck, Jana Arnoldy, Cathy Cleary, Carolyn Farb, Sarah Foshee, Diane Gendel, Grace Givens, Kathy Goossen, Terri Havens, Penny Loyd, Linda McReynolds, Bobbie Nau, Susie Peake, Sue Smith, Annette Strake, Ping Sun, Stephanie Tsuru and Beth Wolff.
