First-time runners
River Oaks Baptist School sixth graders (pictured, from left) Margaret Jensen, Sophia Neylon, Isabella Goytia, Emily Brennig, Morgan Grace and Kate Freeman recently finished their first season on the school’s cross country team. The team feels lucky to be coached by Teresa Neighbors, who was on the U.S. world-championship track and field team in the 1990s. Each of the girls participated in races with either 1.5- or 2-mile distances, and the sixth-grade team finished in second place in the conference. Kate Freeman qualified for the regional Junior Olympics, in Houston. Her 3k finishing time of 12:03 then qualified her for the national Junior Olympics, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
