Congratulations to Michael Zakin, 1988 Bellaire High School grad, whose TV show “Mozart in the Jungle” recently won two Golden Globes including Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy! Michael is one of two “day-to-day” producers who works with the creators, writers, cast, crew and Amazon Studios.

During his time at Bellaire High School, he participated in K-BEL, Bellaire’s TV station, which he said provided an incredible opportunity for students to produce both live TV and pursue filmmaking.

“Without those experiences and especially the sincere encouragement and support of Walter Stricklin (who headed the K-BEL program) I'd probably be doing something else right now but hopefully still receiving shiny awards,” he said.

Since graduating from University of Texas at Austin, Michael has been in the entertainment industry. The early part of his career took place at Virgin Records in the music video production department, where he produced videos for iconic stars such as The Rolling Stones, Ben Harper, Janet Jackson and Lenny Kravitz. For the last nine years, he’s also helped run American Zoetrope. And in addition to “Mozart in the Jungle,” he recently helped produce the Netflix special “A Very Murray Christmas” and the feature film JOSHY, which premieres soon at the Sundance film festival.
