Matthew Erasmus, 11, practices his flying side kick in class at Kim’s School of Tae Kwon Do. His sister, Lauren Erasmus, 14, holds the paddle for him to practice his aim. The siblings have studied tae kwon do for seven years. Matthew won gold in his division in a local sparring competition, and he hopes to compete more in the future. His goal is to master an advanced kick known as a 540. Lauren enjoys learning forms and focusing on the self-defense aspect of tae kwon do, and she hopes to pass the kukkiwon test. In addition to fitness, tae kwon do teaches discipline, coordination and focus.
