Rising seventh grader Jack Hanks was awarded the Matthew Resnick Scholarship Award at West University Little League Closing Ceremonies. Hanks played for the WULL Majors Cardinals and is a student at Pin Oak Middle School. Started in 2008, the $1,000 college scholarship award honors the memory of Matthew Resnick, who passed away in a tragic accident in January of that same year. The award winner is nominated by the West U Little League coaches to the player whose characteristics exemplify Matthew Resnick:  leadership, character and passion for the game.

This year’s award was presented by Mary and Scott Resnick, Matthew’s parents, along with the first Matthew Resnick Scholarship Award Winner, Daniel Halevy. Halevy is now a Division I scholar-athlete, who plays Left Field for the University of Pennsylvania Baseball Team.

“The Matthew Resnick Scholarship award has always meant a lot to me because it both preserves Matthew’s memory and his love of baseball,” says Halevy. “It was an honor to be the first recipient of the award. To me the award represents not just Matthew but also Mary and Scott and Mark Resnick - they are such a great family.  The award means that you carry yourself well - both on and off the field and is a reminder to try your best every day in life and in baseball.”
