Annual Book Fair Comes to Kinkaid
The annual Kinkaid Book Fair is one of the highlights of the school year for students, parents, faculty and teachers. The Melcher gymnasium fills with rows of tables covered in books for students to peruse and purchase. Students from the Lower, Middle, and Upper school each stopped by to browse this year's collection of books for sale.
This event took place on both Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 during school hours and after school. Monday night was family night and families of students came to buy books and also enjoy dinner and cupcakes. During the day, there was also coffee from Java Pura available at a booth in the corner of the gym. Students could also grab a snack from the Love Muffins table.
Students are always given the unique opportunity to donate books in honor of anyone they want to either the Lower, Middle or Upper school libraries. Books could also be given as gifts and brought to the booth right outside the gym where they were wrapped.
Every year multiple authors come to Book Fair to discuss and sign their books. This year Kinkaid hosted Johnny Carrabba, author of With Gratitude, Johnny Carrabba. Another author was Leslie Sinclair, author of Segreto Vignettes. One of the authors of the book, Music of the Butterfly, A Story of Hope by Ann M. Leis & Gail Danziger Klein also visited the Book Fair. Another visiting author was Lindsey Leavitt for her book, Commander in Cheese: Have a Mice Flight, The Big Move, & Oval Office Escape.
Book Fair also gave the opportunity for community authors to come and display their books. One of those authors was Katherine McGee, a former student of Kinkaid. McGee’s book The Thousandth Floor was released in August 2016 and was available to students at its own table at the Book Fair. McGee was signing copies and discussing the book with students throughout the day, answering any questions and giving a bit of an introduction for anyone who was curious.
The 2016 Book Fair was an exciting and successful event. Each year Book Fair provides a wonderful opportunity for students, teachers and families to explore new literature and connect with authors.
