The holidays are a time where giving is a prominent force that leads many people to donate extra money or time to help others in need. This year, The Village School’s Cross Country team held its second annual “13 for 13” fundraising event.
“The ‘13 for 13’ event is a great way to raise money for a good cause,” said Kim Healy, Senior Director of Campus Coordination. “This is our second year to run for a reason and these students push themselves each time in an effort to raise $6,000 for another school.”
The student-runners created the “13 for 13” event, in coordination with Kim Healy, by having 13 runners take turns running for 13 consecutive hours. This year, the team chose The Arbor School, located in west Houston, as the organization they wanted to help. The Arbor School specializes in helping children from infancy to age twelve and their families, gain hope and the opportunity for any child with developmental delays to fulfill their potential.
“These students love this event, but love supporting other students even more. When we visited The Arbor School the students had a great time meeting with the kids and their families. It gave them a purpose to run and try to raise money for this great cause,” said Healy.
On Friday, Nov. 18, 13 members of Village’s Cross Country team gathered at their on-campus outdoor track to begin their 13 hour relay run. The run began at 5:30 a.m. and ended at 6:30 p.m. that evening. The event was conducted in the typical relay fashion where every runner would run one mile then pass the baton to the next runner and so on for 13 continuous hours. Even though rain began to fall in the early afternoon, the entire team simply ran to Village’s indoor fitness facilities and continued the relay on a treadmill. The students ran a total of 122 miles.
All of this running and giving doesn’t stop after the “13 for 13” event. Village School students and staff will participate in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon with a goal to raise $6,000 for The Arbor School.
