Martinis, tobacco and swamps

An excursion to Avery Island during the girls trip to Louisiana.

Sampling a variety of “French” drinks was a bonus on a Louisiana girls trip. Bridge-playing friends of five decades, Rosiana Lee, Barbara Hammer, Patsy Andrews, Gail Northern, Maureen Turner, Joan Postma and Sally Kelly, tried to go on a trip last spring, but they couldn’t get the van out of the driveway with all the flooding going on. Fortunately all of the destinations welcomed them back this year with no penalties. All agreed the Sugar Baron’s seven-course dinner at Houmas House dining room, where The Bachelor was filmed, was the star outing of the week. And they looked like stars in their matching pink T-shirts on a swamp tour. On trips, by the way, they never play bridge!
