"Put that thing on a leash! He might bite someone!" an angry lady yelled at me while I was walking my dog. Moments later, he ran to her and began licking her leg, forcing her to give in to his sweet smile and sociable personality. He is truly one of a kind.
When my parents told my brother and me that we could get a dog, we were overjoyed. The only pets we had up to that point were a frightened little guinea pig and some lizards that we found in the garden. This was big news. We began hunting for the perfect dog immediately. Scrolling through countless websites, looking for the perfect dog, my brother and I began to feel as if all hope was lost. It seemed as if every dog we looked at was not suitable for my family’s lifestyle.
We needed a dog that was old but not too old, big but not massive, within driving distance of home, and most importantly, not high maintenance. After a few months of searching, my brother came across a German Shepherd mix with the perfect age and features. We knew. This was the one.
While his fun-loving personality is one of Pickles’ best features, it also was one of his greatest sources of trouble from the beginning. He would not hesitate to jump in a stranger’s open car door, run in a stranger’s house when the door was open or chase any animal in sight. However, his large smile makes him hard to stay mad at for any long period of time.
Pickles has been a part of my life for almost as long as I remember. Since the summer leading up to fifth grade, he has been by my side to witness the highs and lows of my life, and I have been there to take care of him. Through walking him every day after school, to feeding him every morning and night, to taking him to the vet, Pickles and I have grown inseparable.
