The cool waves lapped against my bare toes. My friend Clara and I sat on the sandy beach, watching yellow-spotted shells rolling along with the waves.
“Isn’t Pensacola Beach such a nice place to be?” Clara asked me.
“Yeah,” I replied.
“Let’s go look for conch shells!” she suggested.
We pulled on our goggles and dove into the murky water. It was hard to see clearly, but we managed to collect a few seashells. Clara was the first to spot a conch, though. We paddled up to shore, and there we paused to look at it. The shell was beautiful. It was the color of roses, streaked with golden orange.
“Wow! That’s gorgeous!” I exclaimed.
“Girls!” Clara’s dad called. He was standing near the waves. There was a little white raft, just big enough for both of us, swaying side to side in the water.
“Let’s go!” I yelled to Clara. Clara and I hopped in the raft. Her dad pushed us into the waves. For a moment, the raft bobbed up and down in the sparkly water. Then we found ourselves riding the crest of an enormous wave. It felt like we were flying. The next moment, we washed up onto the beach with the raft right beside us. We jumped up and ran away before another wave could sweep us up.
Then Clara and I decided to build a sandcastle. We dashed over to our buckets and took our shovels out, one tangerine-colored and the other turquoise. We shoveled some sand into our buckets and dumped it out. It turned out to be a lopsided pile of sand, not very perfect. When I was standing out by the waves, getting some water for our heap of sand, I noticed the beautiful sunset. I called Clara over to look at it.
The sunset was a peachy color, outlined with pink and lavender. It was the most amazing sight Clara and I had ever seen. I thought about it, and realized how special it can be spending time with my best friend.
