SCHOOL DAYS Audrey Finch shares what it’s like to be homeschooled. Next year she’ll head to St. Thomas’ Episcopal to start her sixth-grade year.

I have never been to school. That doesn’t mean I don’t do schoolwork – I do a lot of it. I just don’t go to a building specifically designed for educational purposes. One of the unique things about me is that I am homeschooled. I have been ever since I could walk, but next year things are going to change.

When I was young, I enjoyed homeschooling because it was easy and fun. I had a lot of free time in which I could play outside and with my siblings. As I got older, school became harder, but my mom was always there to help me.

Most days, I enjoy a hot lunch that I can eat whenever I want. I also have a lot of free time in which I can do extracurricular activities such as swimming, basketball, violin, flute and writing.

We applied for school two years ago, but I wasn’t ready then to stop homeschooling. I wanted to stay at home. Things have changed, though. One of the main reasons I am ready to go to school now is that as I grew older, my siblings got on my nerves. Being with them 24/7 didn’t exactly help. I love my brothers and sister, but I think school would be a good time to get away from home and to experience a new environment.

One of the reasons I am glad I get to go to school is that I will see friends on a regular basis. Last year, one of my close friends moved away and another joined a different church, so I didn’t get to see them often.

Another big influence was my friend Mary Sophia Dewhurst. She homeschooled with me last year but went on to sixth grade while I was held back because of a September birthday. I think I am well prepared for what school will be like because of all the things Mary Sophia has told me.

All in all I think school will be a wonderful way to get outside the home, make new friends and acquire new knowledge.
