Voting for YMCA leader
Elena Dinkin (pictured, hugging YMCA member John Zanders) is a finalist in the TexanPlus Championship, a regional contest for people who actively support senior citizens. Dinkin is a former medical social worker and now manages Active Older Adult (AOA) programs at the YMCA of Greater Houston, which has more than 30,000 senior-citizen members. Dinkin spends time helping seniors, some of whom struggle with physical ailments and emotional issues. She encourages seniors who come to the Y to make friends, exercise, garden and share their stories and concerns. The contest is sponsored by TexanPlus, a local health plan, and the Houston Astros. If Dinkin wins, the YMCA of Greater Houston will receive $25,000 for AOA programs. She also will get to throw out the first pitch at the Astros game on Sept. 22. She’s competing with four others in a 12-county region in southeast Texas. Voting is at texanpluschampions.com through Sept. 18.
