Haversham hero
While David and Jane Shavlan were in their “dry” home, watching a helicopter rescue their neighbors one block over, David borrowed a kayak to rescue people and pets with his son Thomas, Robin and Ben Conner, and Kate Conner. For eight days, morning until night, he donned a bathing suit and booties (later, waders) and learned on the spot the business of rescue. They realized they could not put too many personal belongings on a kayak, or it could flip. Later, his friend Philip Leman brought his fishing boat, and they navigated the strong current around submerged cars and floating trees. David is proud of his neighborhood coming together to support each other.
