The Lamar Texans took down the Ridge Point Panthers 36-29 on Black Friday in the 2nd round of the Texas High School Football Playoffs. The showdown took place at Legacy Stadium, Katy ISD’s new $72 million football stadium. Over 5,000 people came out to support the 2 teams, marking the highest attendance for a Lamar football game this season.
The fans got their money’s worth due to the fact that it was an impressive all-around performance for Lamar and close hard-fought game that came down to the wire. In the first half, Lamar’s senior 4-star UT commit cornerback and player of the game, D’Shawn Jamison, really stood out, scoring 1 rushing touchdown, returning a kickoff for an 83-yard touchdown, and grabbing an interception.
The pair of touchdowns from Jamison helped the Texans get out to a 14-13 lead, which was lost late in the 2nd quarter, but was regained seconds later after an incredible kickoff return from junior defensive back and special teams player of the game, Alex Hogan, who weaved through the whole Panther defense and took the kick 65 yards for a touchdown with just seconds remaining in the 1st half to give Lamar a 22-19 lead going into the locker room. After halftime, Lamar allowed an early 2nd half field goal, tying the game at 22 all, but soon after Lamar retook the lead due to the 6’3”, 240 lb. linebacker, and offensive player of the game, Isaiah Ibeto, powering into the end zone for 2 touchdowns on back-to-back drives.
This gave the Texans a 36-22 lead that they would be able to keep. The Ridge Point Panthers scored another touchdown and got the ball back with a minute left, but the Lamar defense held strong to advance to the 3rd round. The highlights from Lamar vs. Ridge Point can be found here.
