When 91 families from Lovett Fine Arts Magnet School were affected by Harvey, other school families began fundraising efforts. They started small, through the sales of “Lovett Strong” T-shirt sales and small cash donations. It blossomed into more. A Chevron and Downey Wholesale group sent an 18-wheeler full of goods to the Lovett families with food, water, cleaning supplies and more. Then, Lovett parents Kurt and Seema Dawson (pictured) and Niti Shah and Rebecca Gomez Stacey had a vision of putting on a benefit concert, called Hope after Harvey. Within a few weeks, they had a venue at The Pub Galleria and commitments from five local bands. The total raised from the concert was $9,167, bringing the total fundraising amount to $19,527 plus $5,000 emergency funds in the PTO budget, which put it at $24,572. The final icing on the cake was a corporate partial match by Target (Meyerland) of $5,000 to get the grand total to nearly $30,000.
