THE NEWSROOM Prithvi Krishnarao, a junior at St. John’s School, says the school newspaper has brought many things to his life: time management, writing, friendship, pranks and, perhaps most important, food.
It was print night. If we wanted to have any hopes of printing the newest edition of the St. John’s School’s The Review by the next morning, we had to send the finished paper to the publisher within the hour. Tensions were running high, and the only sounds were made by the printer furiously printing drafts of pages. All of the sudden, one of our faculty advisors burst through the door, a horse mask covering his head, and the editors intensely working on the paper did a double take to identify the creature. It was our faculty advisor pranking us. All the editors began to die of laughter.
Ever since I joined The Review as a freshman three years ago, I have become accustomed to scenes like this. Although The Review is a serious high school paper, winning awards such as Columbia’s Gold Crown, attitudes here are always lighthearted and caring, even in frantic situations.
I joined The Review in pursuit of something to do, instead of having an unhealthy amount of free periods, and the resulting experience was much more than what I expected.
First, The Review means free food. Every late night that we spend working on the paper, we cater dinner for the editors. Some days this means Whataburger, and other days, acai bowls or Torchy’s Tacos. We also have a stocked snack drawer.
On top of teaching me how to write a completely different way and how to use applications such as InDesign and Photoshop, The Review has taught me lessons. I have learned the importance of managing time, as a single article or design turned in late can prevent an issue from coming out on time.
The most important impact The Review has had on my life is the people that I have met. The editors are a second family to me, and there is no one else I’d rather have make fun of my obsession with Chance the Rapper or Frisbee. I have so much fun working with this group of people every day, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me and The Review.
