Q&A with Lamar Coach Theadis Reagins
Lamar High School has gained significant recognition over recent years for consistently having players recruited to Division I colleges for football. Many of those players have been coached by Lamar’s defensive backs coach, Theadis Reagins, who is in his fifth year at the high school.
He has helped Lamar gain the nickname “DB High,” and his accomplishments have been noticed nationally as he was invited to coach at the Under Armour All-America Game this past January. Coach Reagins recently shared some thoughts about his career coaching high school football.
What’s your favorite thing about coaching at Lamar?
Reagins: I love getting the opportunity to coach some really good kids both on and off the field.
Where’d you play in your football career?
Reagins: I played for Central State University in college, then the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League professionally.
How long have you been coaching defensive backs?
Reagins: I’ve been coaching them for 16 years, so the experience definitely helps.
What makes the defensive backs you coach successful?
Reagins: Their dedication and their work ethic make them really good players.
What was your experience like coaching at the Under Armour All-America Game?
Reagins: It was a great experience because I played defensive back when I was a player, and I got the opportunity to coach with Deion Sanders, who is actually my favorite player of all time. I also got to coach a lot of very talented kids. B.J. Foster (a University of Texas recruit), Trey Dean (Florida), Houston Griffith (Notre Dame) and DeMarvion Overshown (Texas).
In five years at Lamar, Coach Reagins has aided in the development of several talented cornerbacks, as the school has averaged more than one scholarship athlete per year from their secondary.
