Wilchester Elementary third grader Nate Long (pictured, far right) won the Spring Branch-Memorial Sports Association midget homerun derby. All players in the division who hit a homerun, over the fence, during the regular season are invited to participate in the derby. The derby is a fun annual event, which was held at Pine Shadows Elementary School this year. The boys were divided into groups and then began hitting as many out-of-the-park homeruns as they could. Derby semi-finalists were Grant Pinion, JR Befort, Parker Sloan and Nate Long (pictured, from left). Befort and Long advanced to the final round, and tied several times in an effort to win it all. Long eventually won in sudden death and took home the big trophy.
