Home-run event
World Series champion pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and 2017 American League MVP José Altuve teamed up to host Kids and K9s, an event benefiting children’s and animal organizations. The event, held at Tootsies, raised nearly $400,000. Kara and Lance McCullers help rescue animals through the Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation, and Giannina and José Altuve help children with cancer through The Sunshine Kids Foundation. Citizens for Animal Protection’s supporters encouraged others there to help rescue animals. Players, including Carlos Correa, George Springer, Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander, Brad Peacock, and Joe Smith, enjoyed the evening with Baseball Hall of Fame members Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions brought pups available for adoption.
