Out-of-this-world challenge
St. Francis Episcopal School eighth graders (pictured, from left) Dominic Adamo, Randy Goodall, Stanley Fowler, Rob Britton and Luke Romere – also known as Team Lupus (Latin for wolf) – were among the Round 1 winners of the NASA App Development Challenge. The challenge was part of NASA’s Next Generation STEM Initiative, which encourages students in coding and app development. Team Lupus designed an app in support of NASA’s full-stress test of the Orion spacecraft’s Launch Abort System, called Ascent Abort-2 (AA-2). After acing the first round, the students competed in the semi-finals, presenting their app during a live video interview with NASA engineers working on the AA-2 launch test. Though the Wolves didn’t advance to the Round 3 finals, they received praise from the NASA judges.
