WHEN IN ITALY Mariam Lakhani and Ashraf Lakhani and children Shaan and Sofia stroll down a picturesque street in the village of Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, looking for gelato.

Every morning on the 10-day trip in Rome, Florence, Venice and Cinque Terre, a new adventure awaited the Lakhani family. Ashraf, Mariam and Shaan, 10, and Sofia, 6, took one major excursion a day plus a stop at a gelato shop and leisurely strolls. The ease of train rides to seaside villages in Cinque Terre was a nice surprise, and the beach town of Monterosso al Mare a delight in coastal beauty. With pizza and pasta on the menus, the children ate quite well and even managed the 463 steps to the peak of the Duomo. Prego.
