Lachlan Buckingham (pictured), 12, competed in two weeklong, invitational USTA tennis championships for the top 128 players in the country. During the Clay Court National Championships in Orlando, the Spring Branch Middle School sixth grader defeated top players before ultimately losing in the consolation finals. In Mobile, he battled the 20th-ranked national player and advanced to the consolation semifinals. Lachlan plays in the Boys 12 Superchamp division, which is the top division within the USTA’s Texas section. At home, he plays at Shuon Madden’s Tennis Academy, run by a former Texas A&M tennis player. This year, Lachlan will continue in the Boys 12 age group until December when he advances to the 14 age group. He knows the competition will be older, bigger and stronger, but Lachlan is looking forward to the challenge.
